Great at first, but now it is brokenFeb 07, 2008
By Ashlee A. Dominguez We loved our trash can at first, but it began to deteriorate fairly quickly. After one month, it wasn't opening properly. After two months, we had to turn it off and then back on to make it work. At three months, the hinge broke and became unusable. It has a warranty, but it is bulky to ship and the cost of shipping made it more feasable to purchase a new trash can. I do not recommend this product, especially if you have children!

Great Idea, but HUGE waste of moneyFeb 02, 2009
By DSdL This was great at first - although it never worked well with batteries and so we had to spend another $20+ for the AC adaptor. BUT the lid broke within 6 months and I have spent the last 3 months trying to get a replacement lid from the manufacturer. (Their customer service is horrible!) I wish this had worked for us, but it ended up being a huge waste of money at ~$150 (w/AC adaptor) for 6 months of use.

Lid BREAKSApr 29, 2010
By Mark Totally a great idea but a terrible manufactured product. We had ours for just over 1 year and the lid showed signs of stress near the pivot point (where the mechanisim opens lid) and then it eventually broke. A replacement lid from iTouchless is $59! They wouldn't do anything for us. NO MORE iTouchless products for me.

Complete Garbage (spare the pun)Feb 08, 2010
By AaronR This seemed like a good purchase at first. I would encourage my family to recycle more with a tastefully designed bin that was suitable for indoor use. This avoids the obvious disincentive to recycle: walking outside or to the garage to recycle items in an ugly bin or outdoor container.
The main problem with this item is the poor construction of the hinge mechanism. I posted a picture that details the stress fractures of the plastic lid that develop over time. I noticed them at 3 months. At 6 months, the lid no longer opens due to the cracked plastic. Incidentally, I have owned a prior iTouchless device that did the same thing. It was the iTouchless Stainless-Steel Hands-Free 13-Gallon Infrared Automatic Trash Can. It suffered the same problem. Over time the geared/hinge plastic lid cracks off the hinge and the device no longer opens.
Do yourself a favor and avoid this garbage (spare the pun). I would recommend only a container with a stainless construction. I ended up getting a dual bin with foot pedal operation.

This item seemed like a very good solution at the beginning. As stated by others, the hinges broke on our unit after 4 months. The auto open feature worked at the beginning but became very inconsistant after a few weeks. I would not recommend this item. Poor design and quality
