Outstanding Dust ControlDec 01, 2011
By D Willard Contrary to the other review, from our neighbor to the north (Los Angeles) of us, we have noticed a major difference over the several years using Blue Air (Model 500, similar to the 303 but for larger rooms with 3 filters). All we have to do is look at the filter grids and filters (3 of 'em) to see the evidence.
The grids (air intakes) have to be cleaned every week or two, at least, due to a HUGE accumulation of dust. The filters have to be cleaned (blown from the reverse side or where the air "exits" - TOWARD the "intake" sides, or vacuumed FROM the "intake" sides of the filters) every three weeks to a month. That MAY help extend the filter life beyond the 6 month rated duty cycle. Regardless, those grids must be cleaned due to excessive accumulations of dust blocking the air intakes. We also notice a huge accumulation of dust when we "reverse" blow air through the filters and, again, that is in ADDITION to the large quantities of dust that we have already cleaned from the exterior filter grids.
To be honest, at one point, despite the aforementioned precautions we were still getting quite an accumulation of dust in our office, where these are located. HOWEVER, we also have three large, very active and very aggressive male cats whose two litter boxes were located in a confined area - the office (only 25'x35'). First, my wife was using litter that emitted an excessive (I mean EXCESSIVE!) amount of dust. Next when I switched to an almost dust free (99% - compare that to the previous litter!) the dust situation completely disappeared. Obviously the Blue Air filters were able to effectively do the job they were designed to do, keeping up with dust entering the room. Also, as with any room filters, no filter system can be even 50% effective if you have numerous windows open in the house, especially in the room where any filtration system (whether Blue Air and any other manufacturer) may be located and especially in our dusty, arid Southwest summers.
Of the complaints we have read about with excellent filtration systems like Blue Air, many users have not stated that they also keep many windows open. While it may be uncomfortable to keep the windows closed, particularly during our warmer, arid, super dusty Southern California seasons (summer and even our windy Septembers and Octobers!), the only thing any excellent system like Blue Air will accomplish under the above conditions (windows open, etc) will be to clean the outside air entering our buildings!
Bottom line: buy the Blue Air filter systems with confidence, control the dust entering your home, or room (by keeping as many windows, doors, etc closed as possible, despite how uncomfortable that may be), and these will do the job well. Have had ours for five (5!) years with GREAT results (or else I would not have spent $160 per year for filter replacements - for FIVE years!).
Good Health & Happiness!

We had the unit running for 25 days and did not notice any difference in the air quality. Sent it back.
