Finis Lap Track 105027

Description:

Lap track acts as an underwater lap counter and timer. It is a swimmer's own personal pace clock. The clear 6" by 6" display allows a swimmer to keep track of split times, calories burned, and of course, number of laps, all while continuously swimming. The Lap Track fits on most all pool decks as there are various ways of which the unit can be mounted. Included with the packaging is all the necessary set-up equipment: 2 pairs of suction cups (for different sizes tiles), an attachable platform with extenders for use in pools that aren't tiled, and a carrying bag that doubles as a water weight to stabilize the base of the extenders. The Lap Track comes with 2 AAA batteries and no need for additional operating equipment purchases. The Lap Timer function is packed full of information, the number of laps completed, total time elapsed, as well as the completion time of the most recent lap. When using the Lap Counter function, the swimmer can either set a fixed number of desired laps or set the laps to zero and count up (50 laps of which can be stored). If the Lap Track is programmed to count down from the desired figure, the timer will stop when the pre-set laps are completed. Lap Chrono function has the ability to record lap splits and produce calories burned estimates. As one swims, the unit will count time, distance, and compare lap times for up to 50 laps - a "lap" being two lengths of the pool (down and then back to the same side of the pool where the Lap Track is located).

Features:

Completely Waterproof Design: Completely submerged for quick visibility and easy counting.

Multi-Programmable Functions: Allows you to count laps, track splits, go for distance, or simply swim until the timer is up. Each function provides a very personalized workout.

Calorie and Distance Tracker: Simply enter your weight and pool length and the unit will record the total distance.

Tap face of unit to track data and suction cups and mounting brackets.

50-Lap Memory: After your workout, go back and review all your data (splits, fastest lap, calories burned, etc.)

1Basically UselessMar 03, 2008
By Mitchell Kahn
Where to start with this almost useless product.

Let's start with the programming:

- Metric support is in meters. Fine if you have a metric pool. But your choice for English system is MILES. Miles, really? Gee, my pool is 25 YARDS long. So I am forced to use meters for really no apparent reason. And the difference matters on long swims.

- Getting the timer into a mode to count laps and time (why I bought it) is quite confusing and non-intuitive, and I am an engineer. The unit has a lot of features but all I really need are:
* Count laps and split times (maybe count down laps when I am doing a specific distance.)
* Let me setup workouts with rest periods.

Now I can do the first 2 with this timer, but doing it is difficult, especially once the unit is submerged (using it is worse). I can't do the 3rd (sets with rest periods). It's a hell of a lot easier with my cheap Timex watch.

Now for the mechanicals, which is MUCH worse:

- The unit won't stick to the wall of any pool I swim in (3 different ones tried). I've tried all the attachments including the bracket. With the bracket it floats up even with a significant weight on it. Useless. During every swim I have found the unit off the wall.
I took to putting it on deck and using open turns and tapping it. That *might* be ok if not for the next issue.

- The unit frequently double counts when tapped during a swim. Come on, Finis. Put a little smarts in your software. Debouncing is embedded programming 101. If a 50 meter lap takes 2-3 seconds instead of 40, chances are it is a double bounce. It's not rocket science.

I'm giving up on it and going back to a watch. I think a decent in-pool timer can be designed, but this is not it.

1ConfusingFeb 16, 2009

I was looking for a simple lap counter and what I got was a cheap chinese watch wrapped in a plastic bubble. the directions are hard to read and very small. It reminds me of the dollar digital watches when they first came out. Even after getting it set up, it leaked once in the water and only worked for 30 seconds. don't waste your money

4Finis Lap CounterApr 03, 2008
By J. Tandy "IT wannabe"
I am very pleased with the Lap Counter. It is very easy to use, even though the instructions were not very clear. The touch screen is easy to use. It records accurately each time. I use the suction caps rather than the metal hook only because of the shape of our pool. If the Lap Counter is not properly secured to the wall it floats on the water and does not lose any data which has been already entered. I very much enjoy the Lap Counter and find swimming more fun because I no longer worry about how many laps have I swum because the Finis Lap Counter records it all for me. It's a good size counter, light weight and accurate. I'm very happy with it.

1Should Be More User FriendlyMar 14, 2008
By Alice M. Martinez "Pal Al"
I read the instructions, I am somewhat computer literate and my husband is VERY computer literate but this is just NOT a user friendly device.

Just when I had it working for my simple little laps around the pool, it fell and the plastic face broke off of it and I haven't had the patience to work with it again. I am now actually spending $165.00 to get a 31" pace clock!!!!

1Why Did I buy this?Nov 09, 2006
By D. Scott Thompson
This is not a very user friendly piece of equipment. The instruction sheet is confusing to use. The worst option is that it has a metric or english standard. That said, common sense would lead one to beleive that it would measure in meters or yards. But not this, it measures in meters and miles! I can easliy convert the meters to yards - it is simple math - but why would they not use yards!! It has way more features than I really needed, some are cool, but why would I want an alarm clock on my lap counter? I am sure there might be a reason, but I haven't discovered that yet! I should have gotten the thumb counter and save some cash.
