5does the task it was made for and does it wellAug 07, 2007
By Kenneth M. Schulz "ytownken"
after reading many reviews from various sources I wanted to try the altitech for myself I have always wanted the all in one watch altimeter compass but always thought no way I want something that big on my wrist
so when I saw the carabiner version that I can clip to A belt loop I knew this is the one for me

first the build quality is very good and should last in the real world just fine the display is big and easy to read and the night light rocks

I ran through the callabration as stated in manual and then compared with
other devices I already have to compare readings

1 the compass is right on with my anolog compass as long as I am outside inside the car forget it. many have stated that the time out in compass mode is to short just hold the start/lap button and the compass will stay on as long as you want.

2 the temperature was right on with a HVAC IR thermometer that I have when I pointed the IR detector at the therma sensor on the altitech.

3 I set the barometer to the local tv station report which is in inches
to convert to mbar multiply inches X 33.864 = mbar after doing this I went to the altimeter function and got a elevation reading in the ballpark with the reading I get from my GPS I say ballpark because elevation is the least accurate reading on any GPS and will tend to drift but the avarage reading on the GPS was close to the altitech reading which is a steady reading and one I think I would trust more

4 time date alarm chrono timer yea does that to, time will tell how well it keeps time seems fine to me. the alarm is not loud and will not wake you up from A sound sleep unless you duck tape the altitech to your ear
think more of a reminder chirp but who needs a alarm in the great outdoors anyways

5a great toolDec 22, 2007

Unfortunately we had to have a replacement sent. Hopefully the first one was just a dud. The clip and the altimeter unit seperated from one another at a very unopportune time - we lost the altimeter entirely and later realized it was gone... all too late. We're going to try again. Amazon was very gracious and helpful in sending us another at no cost.... When we had it it worked wonderfully! Just be sure to reset it or coordinate it or whatever each day for optimal perfomance.

1Not rugged, inaccurateMay 05, 2011
By Lars Ericson
I had this watch for about 4 months until it fell off my belt yesterday and I lost it.

The pin between clip and watch broke a month ago and I repaired it with a paperclip.

The thermometer was consistently 20 degrees warmer than ambient temperature.

The altimeter was consistent 100 ft lower than actual altitude, even after a manual reset.

The compass I didn't verify but it comes with a complicated calibration procedure.

The screen started fading after 4 months use, which fixed with reset but still annoying. Physically the face started showing a lot of wear after 4 months, just hanging off my belt.

This is a cute toy but it has too many functions I don't need and the functions I didn't need didn't work right. I will replace it with the Casio Pathfinder next, I wouldn't buy from this company again. Also Timex has a similar watch on Amazon but reviews show it to be similarly inaccurate, Casio is apparently the gold standard for this kind of gadget.

5Great watchOct 02, 2010
By John C. Huntington
The watch, barometer, chronograph, and alarm all work perfectly, however the altimeter, even after setting, varies substantially (up to 20%) as to altitude, On the whole, I love it. It is easy to see unobtrusively , especially useful when something begins to bore me.

2Not as rugged as it looksFeb 07, 2009

Highgear AltiTech Computer Watch with Altimeter, Compass, and Thermometer (Shadow)
I have had this product for a year. Last week, it broke off of the carabiner and I lost it. I wasn't treating it roughly, it disappeared when I was riding on the train on the way home, and all I have left is the carabiner.

Other than that, the face scratched easily. I work as a gardener, so it was often exposed to dirt. I tried keeping it protected, but that wasn't easy to do.

Also, the buttons would get pressed when I was wearing it, and I'd have to reset it from time to time. I'd like a way to lock the settings, because I had trouble remembering all of the steps to get back to where I started.

I liked the watch, and would have happily put up with its idiosyncrasies if I hadn't lost it. I'd like to find a similar watch that holds up better.
