Surprisingly good and reliable thermometerDec 12, 2004
By Andrey I was a little worried about getting this because it looked too nice (like a PDA), was inexpensive, and had no reviews to back it up.
But the thermometer itself has worked great, is very accurate and quick to come to the right temperature (as good as my instant). I have regularly used it for the oven, in the grill, and on the rangetop w/o any problems.
The extra features on this unit are great as well. All the saved temperature settings for various types of meat are correct, and the pre-alert lets you take it out to rest before reaching the final temperature. There is also an extra setting which I used to program in the temperature for fish.
All in all, I highly recommend this unit, especially for the price.

Rubbish, absolutely RubbishMay 29, 2006

Wish I could give this item 0 stars, I guess one star will have to do.
I have had three of these, one maverick, one William Sonoma, one polder, all the same exact make/model, just different branding.
Two were gifts, one I bought and returned. I have replaced the probe twice on each - guess I didn't learn my lesson fast enough.
I should clarify the display device works like a charm - timer function is great, and probe works as long as it doesn't need to be in the oven, grill, smoker or other hot environment (for e.g. it can be used to have an alarm go off when your water is about to boil).
But in general the metal probe is complete rubbish, it does not stand the test of time or a 350 deg F oven. The insulating material around the thermocouple consistenly fails prematurely.
I bought these because I saw Alton Brown (Good Eats) use a similar model - this was a bad idea - I have been dissappointed time and time again with this item. Please do not buy this item, unless you plan on purchasing a probe that can withstand the temperatures w/in your oven/grill (See Grainger for a probe that can w/stand at least 600Deg F)

Top Notch ThermometerNov 24, 2004
By Jason David Baker All you could want in a probe thermometer. The probe responds almost instantly to temperature change and is more accurate than any of the other probe thermometers I've tried. Timer includes seconds, which pricier pyrex and polder models do not. Timer can count down or count up as you are cooking, and will continue counting after you remove food from the oven to rest. I've also used it many times in the grill with no problem.

Watch How You Use This Item! KEEP THE MANUAL!!May 05, 2005

I purchased this thermometer even though some people had left negative feedback about it. This model was attractive to me because it was reasonably priced, had a slim design, LARGE LCD screen with easy to read numbers, AND was advertised FOR USE ON THE GRILL!! Well, take my advice and watch out! I've used this item TWICE on the grill since I bought it 80 days ago, and it's already broken! Immediately upon plugging the meat thermometer into the device an alarm goes off and won't stop reading "overdone". This is before I even put it into the meat. I called the customer service phone number in the manual, and the rep said if I've cleaned it properly after each use (which I had) the only possible explanation for the operational failure is that the probe got too hot and is broken. She offered to send out another probe at no cost to me, but also said this thermometer WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE USED ON THE GRILL! Even though the model's temperature capacity was advertised to read up to 500 degrees. She said this was only approved for oven use, and I should consider buying one of their more expensive models to use on the grill. I have yet to try and use it in the oven, so I can't tell you how it works. I will say that it is VERY convenient and functional as a timer and stopwatch for baking and household activities. Bottom line - I'm sorry I bought it!

Works well until it breaksJun 04, 2006
By James Bellanca I loved this thermometer for the first four times I used it. It let me accurately cooked all the food I used it on. But after four uses, it broke. The display unit works fine, but the temperature probe is broken -- after some research, I found out that it won't resist temperatures over about 200 degrees -- and my grill will get hotter than that. Oh well, I guess you get what you pay for!
